Portrait Group Sessions

Following the success and popularity of a group during the summer, it has been suggested the Society develop the theme by holding a similar session on the first Tuesday of every month, starting in October.
This would be within the usual meeting times and place, the remainder of the club continuing as normal.
Initially the format would be:
7:05 to 7:45 First sitter - subject = portrait,
7:45 to 8:05 Tea/coffee break
8:05 to 8:45 Second sitter - subject = figure (i.e. full body.)
(This arrangement means the sitters get less cramp, and each has part of the evening drawing!)
No ‘teacher’ will be available – only members to help each other. Whilst ‘life’ drawing is a true challenge, most enjoy the experience, and are surprised at their own results.
Members to choose and supply their own materials, although the club may supply some samples to give an opportunity to try alternatives.
NOTE: Being part of the group would require a commitment to sit at sometime as the subject for one of the sessions.

Dates for these sessions are as follows:

7th October, 4th November and 2nd December.

A form will be distributed at next week's meeting where members can express their interest in being included in such a group.

It has been proposed to form a small “Portraits” or “Figures” group during the summer sessions.

Place: Within the usual room at Linskill Centre

Time: Tuesdays, 7pm to 9pm from 15th July to 26th August. i.e. 7 weeks

Materials: Each member to choose and supply their own

This would require a commitment from each participating member to sit as the subject for one of the evenings. No “teacher “is available, only members to help each other.

If you are interested, please let a committee member know.

Exhibitions. What should we do differently?

This tuesday 4th Feb, we have having an open discussion on our exhibitions.
Some of the points to be discussed are

What are the rules?
How many paintings per member should be displayed?
How long before an unsold painting can be re-exhibited?

Our next demonstration will be on Tuesday February 12th at 7:00. The artist demonstrating will be Tony Montague.
Examples of his work can be found here.

Tony's demonstration will be on basic oil techniques and he will complete a painting on the night. He also intends to bring handouts on Oil Painting Basics and on Colour Mixes for various subjects in oils/acrylics/watercolours.

NSAS member Dave Armstrong is exhibiting at The Linskill Centre, North Shields on Saturday 1st November from 1:00pm until 4:00pm as part of a Christmas Fair. The admission price is £1.00 including a drink and a biscuit. Dave advises that the drink is unfortunately not Newcastle Brown Ale.

Last night Joe Hush gave us an inspiring demonstration on the use of acrylics when he painted a Scottish landscape for us. The painting was done on watercolour paper primed with gesso. Joe explained that this prevented the acrylic paint from soaking in and allowed him to make "adjustments" as he was going on or to remove paint to show a lighter background. Joe says "I tell my students that I have never made a mistake but I have made hundreds of 'adjustments'!". He showed us how he used reservoir paper in his palette to keep his paint soft and workable, and he also demonstrated how, rather than just mixing a colour to use, he kept the two colours adjacent to each other on the palette so that he could continue to blend the colours together and achieve small variations easily. Joe explained how his technique was to draw a pencil sketch from a photograph that he had taken at the scene. This allowed him to get a better feel for the tonal variation that he wanted to achieve in the painting. He demonstrated his use of a merely "damp" brush which allowed him to vary considerably the amount of paint he wished to apply to the painting.

John Dyer's Demonstration

We were treated to an excellent demonstration by John Dyer last night. John showed us how he generates characters and illustrations for his customers who include Walt Disney, Warner Bros. and Tomy amongst others. He showed us how he starts off with a rough drawing of a character which is then subject to approval by the client. After this approval he has to submit a cleaned up drawing for approval. This is followed by an ink, again submitted for approval. Once this has been approved it is scanned onto his computer. He demonstrated his fascinating and rapid use of Adobe photoshop by creating a colour image of Winnie The Pooh which he dropped into a background and which was use to generate the printing layout for a Winnie The Pooh mug sold in Walt Disney shops.

In the second half of his demonstration John showed his use of Adobe Photoshop in a more traditional way by electronically "painting" a portrait of fellow NSAS member Tom Pike, using as a base a candid photograph of Tom taken at the previous week's NSAS meeting. Unfortunately (or fortunately, John said) Tom was not at the demo to see the portrait being done, however John has since presented him with an A3 colour laser print of the finished image.

Sylvia Lynch Demonstration

Another excellent demonstration last night from Sylvia Lynch. This time Sylvia demonstrated her use of pastels creating a superb picture of a hare using two sources of reference. One was a photocopy of a scraper board illustration of a hare which she used for the basic shape and texture of the fur and the second was a magazine photograph which she used for the effect of sunlight on the hare's fur.

As you can see, I've done a bit more work on the new site. I've added links to sub-blogs with photos of demonstrations that we have had, and created space for new photographs of an upcoming demonstration

New Site

As we are beginning to run out of space on our MSN Groups site, I have set up this new blogger site where we can post all of our news and have links to other blogs for each member, thereby allowing us almost unlimited space to publish our images. It also looks more professional and is less clunky and easier to navigate and to post to. (I hope). You will see that John and I have similar blogs where we have posted our art. We can easily set up these blogs for any member who wants one. All you need is a free google account (you just need a valid email address and a password) I think members will find this easier to set up than the MSN passport that some have had difficulty with.

We can set the site up to archive our posts and discussions so we can look back on posts.
